Developing Social-ABI-lity: An Online Course to Support Safe Use of Social Media for Connection After Acquired Brain Injury

People with acquired brain injury (ABI) often experience difficulties using social media, and clinicians report limited preparedness to support them, prompting the development of a collaboratively designed, evidence-based online training resource. Using mixed methods—including qualitative research, a scoping review, co-design with stakeholders, and a pilot trial—the study developed and tested the social-ABI-lity prototype, which emphasised interactive, practical training in online safety, wellbeing, and social connection. Pilot findings showed small improvements in participants’ confidence and knowledge, suggesting the course is a promising and innovative resource to support social media participation after ABI.
